Hook ‘Em In: Crafting Videos That Don’t Make People Hit “Skip”

Diving into the world of video advertising doesn’t require you to be the next Steven Spielberg, but hey, capturing a bit of his magic wouldn’t hurt, right? The trick lies in producing content that instantly grabs attention – think of it as the digital version of making a killer first impression. You don’t want your video to be the one people can’t wait to skip. Crafting engaging videos starts with knowing your audience, and what problems you solve for them. What makes them tick? Laugh? Click? It’s all about hitting the right emotional buttons, which can range from humor to heartfelt stories that resonate on a personal level. Sometimes, it’s just about showing how your product or service can turn their bad day into a good one.

Remember, in video advertising, the first few seconds are like gold – and you’ve got to spend that gold wisely. Start strong with something unexpected or visually stunning that pauses that “skip” finger in mid-air. Use vibrant visuals, captivating music, and a hook that’s as compelling as your favorite movie cliffhanger. Keep it short and sweet; your goal is to convey your message before viewers even have the chance to think about skipping. And please, don’t let your video be a monologue about how great your product is. Instead, show real people, real situations, and real solutions. This approach not only helps in creating a connection with your viewers but also stands a better chance of turning them from viewers into customers.

Why Your Small Business Needs To Jump On The Video Ad Train, Like, Yesterday

If you’re still on the fence about incorporating video ads into your small business marketing strategy, it’s time to shake off those doubts. Why, you ask? Simply put, video advertising has morphed from a “nice-to-have” to an absolutely indispensable element of any digital marketing strategy. It’s the digital age’s equivalent of shouting from the rooftops, except way cooler and far more effective. Picture this: millions of potential customers scrolling through their feeds, hungry for content that entertains, educates, or just gives them a break from the monotony of their day-to-day– why do you think the average person spends more than two hours a day on social media? That’s where you come in, seizing the perfect opportunity to dazzle them with creative, engaging video content that tells your brand’s story in a way no static ad ever could.

And let’s talk numbers for a second, because they don’t lie. Video content, especially those bite-sized, attention-grabbing ads, boast engagement rates that other types of digital advertising can only dream of. We’re talking about creating a more profound connection with your audience, one that can lead to higher conversion rates, increased brand awareness, and customer loyalty that’s as solid as a rock. And the best part? It’s not just the big players who can make waves with video ads; small businesses can (and do) achieve remarkable results on a budget. Thanks to a plethora of tools and platforms designed to democratize video production and distribution, creating high-quality video content has never been more accessible or affordable. So, if you haven’t yet embraced video advertising, it’s high time to consider how it can electrify your marketing strategy and help your small business stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Platforms Where Your Videos Can Shine

So, you’ve decided to dive into video advertising to jazz up your small business marketing strategy? Excellent choice! Now, let’s talk about where these video masterpieces of yours will garner the most attention, engagement, and ultimately conversions for your videos. Naturally, the big guns like YouTube and Facebook pop up first in your mind, and rightly so. YouTube, the colossal of video content, offers an immense audience alongside detailed targeting options to ensure your video ads reach the exact demographic you’re aiming for. Similarly, Facebook’s massive user base and sophisticated ad system allows you to micro-target your audience based on interests, behaviors, and more, making sure your video content gets put in front of the right audience.

Moving on, Instagram and TikTok have entered the chat, and they’re making waves in the video advertising world. Instagram, with its visually inclined audience, offers the perfect backdrop for businesses looking to showcase their products or tell their story in a more intimate and aesthetic manner. Whether it’s through stories, reels, or IGTV, Instagram provides a variety of formats to connect with your audience. TikTok, on the other hand, is the wild card that has proven its worth. Its meteoric rise to fame has made it a fertile ground for businesses aiming to capture the attention of younger audiences as well as an increase in users aged 45+. With its addictive, short-form content, TikTok can help your business go from zero to hero by getting your brand in front of millions of potential customers in a fun and engaging way. However, the right kind of ad must be crafted per platform. What works on Facebook or Youtube might not work on TikTok or Instagram. So it may be best to stick with and master one or two, unless your time or budget allows for a lot of editing.

Measuring Success Without Needing A Math Degree

Diving into video advertising can feel like stepping onto a roller coaster—exciting and nerve-wracking, especially when you’re trying to figure out if your investment is actually paying off. But here’s the good news: you don’t need to be a math wizard to track your success. Thanks to the myriad of user-friendly analytics tools available today, understanding how your videos are performing is more about knowing what to look for rather than crunching complex numbers. Specifically, keep an eye on engagement metrics like view count, likes, shares, and most importantly, the amount of time people actually spend watching your videos. These indicators will tell you not just how many people clicked on your content but also how engaging they found it.

Moreover, conversion rates are your best friend when it comes to measuring the ROI of your video advertising efforts. Did that snazzy video lead to more sign-ups, inquiries, or purchases? Link your video content to specific calls-to-action (CTAs) and monitor the analytics to see how effectively your videos are converting viewers into customers. Tools like Google Analytics or dedicated dashboards from social media platforms offer a straightforward look into these metrics. If the numbers start creeping up, you’re on the right track. And remember, video advertising is as much an art as it is a science. Experimenting with different types of content, lengths, and storytelling techniques, combined with close monitoring of your analytics, will help you refine your strategy and hit those business goals without having to dig out your old college calculator.

youtube advertising

Let’s Briefly look at this client, who has been running video ads on YouTube for a little over a month now. We wanted to incorporate YouTube specifically because of a lack of brand awareness within their niche, which is glamping in a specific location in the United States.

What we did was set up their ads to be focused on all the states surrounding the service as well as the state where the business is. Then, we targeted specific YouTube channels that would line up their interests with glamping- outdoorsy and travel channels.

As you can see, we are seeing nearly half of those viewers who see the video watch it beyond the initial 5 seconds, and paying $.04 to get people to see it. Meaning we’re paying 8 cents to advertise to interested customers and get the name out there to a highly specific target. That’s a very low amount to get your name in front of somebody who may be interested!
